The event is based on the Shrimad Bhagwat Mahapuran, especially its 10th Skandha (Canto), which narrates the life of Lord Krishna.
The Purana contains 12 Cantos, 335 chapters, and over 18,000 verses.

Sankalp (Spiritual Intention): The host/family takes a vow to conduct the katha with devotion.
Kalash Sthapana: Setting up a sacred water pot representing divine presence.
Ganesh Puja: Invocation of Lord Ganesha for removal of obstacles.
Guru Vandana: Homage to the guru or spiritual master.
Vyas Pujan: Worship of Bhagwan Veda Vyasa, the compiler of the Bhagwat.

Each day covers specific Skandhas (Cantos) or stories, for example:

Many kathavachaks use harmonium, tabla, dholak, and manjira for musical support.
Attendees often participate in seva, bhog preparation, and decorating the venue.
Prasadam (blessed food) is distributed daily.
